This paper is an innovative application of techniques for the measurement and decomposition of productivity change to virgin olive oil Protected Designations of Origin (PDOs). In contrast to the traditional decomposition of productivity change based exclusively on two components, in this paper, a triple decomposition is preferred that captures all possible sources of inefficiency, both in inputs and outputs, and avoids infeasibilities on assessing mixed periods. In this way, technical efficiency change and technological and scale efficiency changes were estimated for the recent six-year period 2008-2013. Following our results, there was a decrease in the global productivity of these PDOs in the first part of the period as well as in the last biennium studied, basically due to technological changes in the sector. However, changes in technical efficiency were mainly positive.
